Basics of ADHD: Environmental and Genetic Factors
As an adult with ADHD, I think it would be more useful to talk about what ADHD is before explaining the benefits of ADHD Coaching for Adults.
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in English, has long been thought of as a problem of childhood, but it can significantly affect an individual’s life in adulthood. In Gabor Maté‘s book Scattered Minds, an approach is adopted which argues that ADHD is mainly caused by environmental factors. According to Maté, childhood stresses and emotional deficits in the parent-child relationship affect brain development and lead to the emergence of ADHD characteristics. Maté explains this situation as a result of children’s mental defence mechanisms; distraction may be a reaction developed for emotional protection.
However, there are scientific studies showing that genetic factors also play an important role in ADHD. Various genetic studies show that 70-80% of ADHD is inherited. This suggests that genetic predisposition combined with environmental triggers may increase ADHD symptoms. The presence of genetic factors does not mean that the condition is completely immutable. The theory of neuroplasticity argues that the brain can remould and develop throughout life. This means that with the right support and coaching, individuals can cope with ADHD in a healthier way.
Effects of ADHD on Adult Life
For adults, ADHD can lead to difficulties, especially in work, social relationships and daily life organisation. Adults with ADHD may often experience the following problems:
- Organisation and Time Management: Many adults may find it difficult to complete tasks on time. Forgetfulness, procrastination and distraction are common in this process.
- Work and Career Problems: Constantly changing priorities at work, frequent mistakes and inability to focus on details can negatively affect work performance.
- Social Relationships: Individuals with ADHD may experience difficulties in friendships and romantic relationships, especially due to listening difficulties and impulsive behaviours.
Maté emphasises that the recognition of ADHD in adulthood helps the individual to understand the cause of many of the problems they have experienced in the past. This awareness allows the individual to make peace with himself/herself and develop self-compassion.
Benefits of ADHD Coaching for Adults
ADHD coaching can create significant changes in both the daily life and personal development of the individual. This process focuses on the following goals:
- Emotional Awareness: Individuals with ADHD can develop healthier coping strategies by recognising their emotional reactions.
- Personal Organisation: Strategies are developed in areas such as time management, priority setting and task tracking.
- Self-Confidence: The sense of self-efficacy is increased by focusing on the individual’s strengths.
- Emotion Regulation: Support is provided to manage behaviours such as impulsivity and sudden decision-making.
The process of ADHD coaching enables individuals to understand themselves and transform the conditions around them, leading to a significant increase in their quality of life. Managing ADHD symptoms opens the door to realising one’s potential, especially when this process is supported by self-compassion and patience.
Finding Balance in Life with ADHD
ADHD coaching for adults supports individuals not only to cope with symptoms, but also to discover their strengths and use them effectively. Despite the challenges of ADHD, with the right guidance, individuals can find balance in their careers and personal lives and lead a fulfilling life.
Recognising ADHD as a different mindset, not an obstacle, allows the individual to make peace with himself/herself and discover his/her potential. With the right strategies, patience and support, each individual can take strong steps forward on their own path.
